The theme matters more than you would think. It is not decoration — it sets what half the island is wearing, what the parade floats are built around, and what the costume-contest categories reward. A theme this broad is a gift: anything from Bowie to Broadway counts, and you will see both, repeatedly, sometimes in the same group.
Schedules shift. Before you book anything specific, check the official Fantasy Fest event listings — individual event dates, venues and ticketing are published there and are the only version that counts.
What the week actually feels like
The first weekend is the warm-up. Locals are still going about their lives, the early events are busy but manageable, and you can still get a table somewhere without a plan. By midweek the visitor numbers climb and Duval Street becomes the main event after dark — costumes ranging from elaborate to barely-there, street performers, and a crowd density that is either exactly what you came for or a good reason to stay off Duval entirely.
Then the final weekend arrives and the island is full. Parade day is the peak: tens of thousands of people along the route, floats, marching groups, and a genuinely impressive amount of work visible in the costumes. It is loud, hot, slow-moving and worth seeing once, minimum.
Daytime is a completely different festival from night, and daytime is underrated.
The part most guides skip
Fantasy Fest is an adult-oriented costume festival, and the late-night Duval scene is squarely aimed at adults. But the daylight hours are a different event entirely — brunches, street fairs, pet and costume contests, and a lot of very good people-watching with a coffee in your hand. If the nightlife version does not appeal to you, the morning version still might.
And here is my actual bias: the best thing about festival week is that the water is still wide open. Everyone is on land. Late October in the Keys is one of the better stretches of the year on a boat, and I will take a flat morning on the water and an afternoon nap over a second consecutive night on Duval every single time.
Planning notes from someone who lives here
- Accommodation is the whole game. Key West is a small island with a fixed number of beds. Festival week rooms go early and prices climb steeply as you get closer.
- Do not plan to drive on the island. Parking during the final weekend is a genuine problem and road closures around the parade route make it worse. Walk, bike, or use the shuttles and taxis.
- Costume beats outfit. Turning up in regular clothes is the one way to feel out of place. Even a minimal effort reads as participation.
- Build in a recovery day. Ten days is long, the heat is real, and nobody sustains festival pace for the whole stretch.
- Shoulder days are the sweet spot. If crowds are not your thing, the opening weekend and the Monday-to-Wednesday window give you the atmosphere without the crush.
- Get on the water at least once. Sunrise on the flats after a late night is an unreasonably effective reset.
